I've been working on a painting. I should make more picture, it makes me happy.

Sewing is a more viable creative outlet when children consume your life. Where as painting must consume you. I pulled an all nighter to finish her and was terribly cranky from lack of sleep for a couple of days after (sorry kiddies). A few daytime Nanny naps and early nights later and I'm chipper again.

I've had this lil' number made for a few weeks. I couldn't resist this banana print and used McCall's 8569 from 1951 to make this skirt. This is the 2nd time I've made this skirt and surely won't be the last. I love the style feature of the puckered pocket and the little split in the front waist band which reminds me of a vest.

You'll have to excuse the crushed fabric, I was wearing it for a few hours before I got a chance to get Ginger to take some photos.

Rock and Roll saved my life

I found the best barkcloth fabric in a dodgy dusty antique shop and paid more than I thought I should have, to get home and lovingly hand wash it (although the woman swore she had washed it) for half of it to fall apart in my hands all the while filling my bucket with mud. Washed, phaw!! I was looking forward to making a full circle skirt alah Rock and Roll style, but all I could manage was this slightly flared skirt. Pales in comparison to the vision in my head, but I love it all the same. Made with a1972 pattern by Style, number 3788, version 2. It was quick and easy to make, as skirts tend to be, which is why I am digging them so. What to do with the deteriorating bits left???

I have made this top from simplicity 4056 maybe from the late 60's. The fabric is a lovely light weight linen. I love the idea of this top more than the actual top, it's a bit boxy. I will rock it though, it took me far too long to make to simply leave it in my wardrobe. Simple to make my but! You get that with dress making, sometimes it's just not as fabulous as you want it to be, other times it takes you completely by surprise.

This is how I actually wore the skirt on this day, with my fall back tank.

I have also been making the basic tee, the pattern of which comes a PDF from Steph at 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World. It needs a little tweaking for my narrow shoulders.

This post was sitting as a draft for a couple of weeks, I got called away as a busy mummy, but I'm back now, after a spell of being a little run down and alot tired.

Pants, I love them, but I loathe them.

I thought I'd blog my cause to get the very talented Steph over at 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World to help me make some fabulously well fitted pants with her custom pants block.

If I cross my knees a little they look better.

I have been trying to make myself some fabulous pants without much success. As you can see from these pictures, the crotch is too long or is that the waist is too high? The legs look funny too. I would desperately love a well fitted capri style pant, one that is not to high that I can't eat anything and not low that muffin tops fly free.

Fabric for glam rock pants

As spring approached I found some awesome fabric that immediately inspired me to own a pair of Jeff and Steve McDonald (of Redd Kross glory) style glam rock pants. The fabric has no give in it at all and I wonder if this will greatly affect the fitting?

Undeniably cool

My Harry High Pants were some what a success but since then I have tried to make 60's pedal pushers, 60's cigarette pants and shortie short shorts for summer, but they just don't please me. I have tried tracing the shape of the crotch minus the very high waist but I have other fitting issues which were not an issue before, like too tight on the thighs. Am I tracing it wrong or does or is it something to do with the fabric? I'm afraid I have not been documenting my failures. Only crying in a sea of unpicked threads.

I made some regulation trousers with a 40's pattern and I don't know how I feel about them. The fabric is kinda slinky. They are definitely too long, but then I feel like they will be as wide as they are long. Ho hum.

Between not having much clue about the correct fabric choice, the length of the crotch or was that the length of the waist? The shape of the legs in ratio to the length of the legs, I have not much clue at all. I have a willingness to know though.

Lace, Lace makes my heart Race

Back in November I went to a wedding and made a dress which I quickly blogged about. At the time I cut out two dresses with similar themes. Lace and velvet ribbons. Swoon. There is something about this combination that I love love love. I have recently finished the other dress. I thought I'd share them both with you, plus a couple of others.

I found this mint green lace in an op shop and the English racing green velvet ribbon at a run down haberdashery and fabric shop at Redcliffe. I had the same colour green in my stash, it is a cotton, quite a thick one, I think this dress may have to be a wintry one.

It is made with McCall's 4150 from 1955. I love how easily this dress came together. The neck facing was the same piece as the bodice and just had to fold over. I had to put gussets in the arm and even they were a breeze. I guess the more often you do them the easier it gets. The side zip makes this dress a true wiggle dress, I truly had to wiggle it on and off.

The dress I wore to the wedding was a style that I had made before, I had to make it quickly as I left the making of the dress to the last minute. I used a nude lace that I got from the markets, the lady said it was old, but I don't know how old or even how to judge that. It is really thin. I found the beautiful baby blue velvet ribbon then found some cotton voile to match. The combination of voile and thin lace was slippery and I struggled keep them together. It ended up taking longer to make the blue dress for this reason.

It's made from McCall's 5891 from the 1960. I omitted the bias binding trim using the voile instead to finish the neck and arm holes nicely, making it a bit posher. I love the scoop of the back of this dress.

I also made this dress for my new sister in a candy pink lace with a nude cotton voile.

I originally cut this pattern out in some fab barkcloth fabric that was curtains at my Nan's house, and have recently finished it, sadly it is too small, but total country chic with a blue gingham bias binding trim.

My blue lace dress was so light that it was a little see through. A quick dash round the shops to find a slip was disastrous. They were all synthetic. I decided it would be faster and cheaper to make one. Bring in a Fashion Cut Pattern, 3265. There is no date on this more obscure pattern. I don't know it's origins either. I have a few Fashion cut patterns and they are mostly pretty slip/nighties. I have some flesh coloured voile and some matching lace to whip up this modesty slip.

Phew, I feel like this post has been massive. I have a bit of bogging to catch up on. The whipper snappers are back to school today (minus Ginger), so I have more time to blog and sew and organize stuff.
I'll leave you with a snapshot of my bathroom window. I made these little felt balls for some extra colour. I love my Avon perfume bottle and check out the crazy flower on the cactus. It looks and feels like plastic.

Ginger and I have been beautifully matched for the last 3 days.
I love prints, but enough is enough. I need some block colours. I had no intention of buying pink, I really didn't know what colour I needed or wanted. Fushia pink just sang to me on this particular day. I drafted my own half circle skirt in this pink linen. I was amazed at how quick and easy this is and t is lovely to wear. I used my An Pan Man (a character from Japan, that is plastered all over their school buses) button.

I have been a mad little sewer lately. I have decided I need to tidy up loose ends in the sewing corner. I am finishing projects that got put on hold for one reason or another and in the process have been inspired to start new projects. I found a skirt that I started making into a dirndl skirt with an elastic casing. It was far too bulky however and just recently I unpicked it and made a waist band. It was so simple and easy that I wonder why I didn't do it sooner. I came across this fabulous poodle fabric that my gal pal got for me from Japan. It has these large grids on it which I didn't want to cut through. Enter the straight dirndl skirt. Perfect. I love it, it is so easy to wear. We didn't get a very clear full length photo, I'm afraid. I used a frog clasp (thanks Madelaine) because I forgot to allow a seam for the invisible zip to go to the top.

This little halter neck dress is made from McCall's 2217 from 1969. It was a bit of a dud for my shape. The top was gapey even after I made it smaller. I cinched in the bosom making it almond shaped rather than triangular and the back is rather low for a gal who prefers to wear support. I love the fabric though, which is a lovely feeling cotton from the 60's. The zip is pretty fabulous too.
I LOVE Ginger in this little dress. I made it for Stella a few years ago. It is made from an old curtain. The colours are amazing. It has been lined with Michael Miller's bubbles fabric and can be worn reversable. Ginger has the cuttest little pudgy legs. This is how short my sisters and I wore our dresses in the 70's.

Happy New Year Folks.

My 2011 Christmas cards have doubled as New Year cards. I purposley avoided an overtly Christmas theme for that reason.

I have been a bit quiet on the blog front. We have been stay-cationing at home and I thought I'd give the computer a break. I even managed to read a book. I have been busy sewing and stuff, mostly eating and drinking and relaxing.

I wanted to share some hilarious photos from our Christmas. Drinks were flowing and the dress ups were out. My husband found a new friend to play dress ups with. His jaw dropped when he saw Matt's dress up box. They were a couple of giggling school girls.

As a mummy it is fun to dress the young'uns up and take photos and use the making of Christmas cards for the precedence. I started a few years ago and people come to expect it of me now.
This year I made the kids bird costumes. Not the most christmassy costumes. It is quite difficult to keep thinking of Christmas style photos that are different each year. I had been wanting to make Stella a peacock outfit for a while, because I love them and she is a bit of a showoff herself. But Alby as a rooster and Ginger as a penguin??? Birds are a bit festive I guess. Ah, it'll keep em wondering.

School's out for Summer....

Hoot who. I have been looking forward to lazy mornings and no uniforms in the wash.
It's been a frantic lead up to the end of a school year. (I can't believe how quickly my babies are growing). The last couple of weeks have been quiet on the blogging front but very busy here in my domestic wonderland. Teachers are very special people in the kids lives and they deserve to have gifts lavished on them at this time of year. However I am mindful not to give them another mug or Christmas tree ornament to clog up there lives and too much chocolate is too much at this glutinous festive time.
This year Stella drew pictures of her teachers with fabric markers on off cuts of fabric and we used patterned fabric on the back, stuffed them with filling and wah lah. Very cute and personalized gifts.

In Alby's composite classroom he has 3 teachers and 2 teacher's aides. Phoaw, 5 presents. Could have been costly. Luckily I am thrifty and crafty!! Earlier in the year I screen printed some of the kids drawings to make the seat cushions for reading chairs that were auctioned off at the school fate. I had the foresight to print extras. I threw in some polka dot fabric (who doesn't love polka dots?) and a zip and made some little pillows. Very darling, made one for Al too.

I have for a few years now made up these little hands free bags which are a perfect size for one's keys, phone and wallet. Another great way to use up off cuts of cool fabric, or those swatches of fabulous fabric that you find in the op shops that are way too small for any substantial garments but you just can't leave them behind. These bags are great to have on hand for back up gifts. I made about 20 this year.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. The Christmas tree is up, the kids are home, the shops are crazy busy, the only thing missing is Brisbane's sweltering summer days. It is unseasonably cold, 22 degrees instead of 35. I even had to dig out some winter woollies this week.
I have been busy making some fabulous costumes for the kids to make some equally fabulous Christmas cards. I just need a fine day to take some photos. Stay tuned.
Well tootle pops. I have done a terrible thing (but I'm sure I will love it) and booked an additional 7 kids for a play today and really must get the house tidy so they can tear it up again.

I love a wedding especially because you get to get dressed up.
I went to my brother in law's wedding yesterday and it was a lot of fun. His wife, now my sister is a girl after my own heart. Amber loves a dress up, as do I.
I made myself a new dress (of course) to wear to the wedding. I really wanted to wear lace. I had a few lengths of different colours in my stash of fabric. My first choice was the candy pink lace from the 60's, I think, but alas there was not enough for me for the length that I like to wear my dresses. I offered it to Amber (she LOVES pink) and made her a fabulous frock (because that's what sister do) that I gave to her the day before her wedding. She loved it (phew) and it fit her perfectly. I lined Amber's dress with a bone cotton voile, for that sexy skin look.

I am on this lace thang at the moment. Although it was tricky to use, so slippery.

And I wore a stunning vintage lace dress, homemade, for my wedding last year. .

For my dress for the wedding I used a bone lace and lined it with a baby blue cotton voile. I desperately wanted to have a velvet ribbon tied around my waist so the lining colour was determined by what I could find in s short space of time. That and my BFF, Pete, pictured above once had the most fabulous and glamorous baby blue suit that I loved. Both my dress and Amber's dress was made from McCall's 5891 from 1960. I used this pattern once before so I was certain of the fit, for my dress for the races.

I do love a wedding and Scott and Amber's really stood out as being one of the best. It was held on the Brisbane river at the Powerhouse. There was no formal seating and the speeches were fantastic. The best and funniest part was the photo booth. I gave Amber some of our household dress ups and the way people interpreted them was hilarious. I have to admit I did spend alot of time there, as Amber said I would. Here is a select few, alot are unappropriated for uncorrupt eyes. Christmas with Amber in the family now is going to be a blast.

The kids along with their cousins were in the wedding party and looked and behaved adorably.

Pretty as a Petal

Hello my pretties. This week while I was meant to be making a dress to wear to my brother in law's wedding, I made myself a skirt.

I have been admiring the scalloped edge since I saw the Barbra Coty silk dress at the "Dreaming of Chanel" exhibition earlier this year. I was lucky enough to find this fabulous Vogue pattern 7530 from 1951.
I have made this skirt with polka dotted fabric from the stash, it was given to me by a friend's mum. It is a beautiful crisp (maybe) linen. It has a tiny cross hatch texture.

The pattern called for snap fasteners on the left opening, but I used a zip for ease of dressing and insertion. The hem of the scalloped edge was meant to faced in the same fabric and 8 inches wide, but I didn't have enough dots or anything subtle or suitable so I faced my skirt at about 2 inches with a white voile.
I really love the narrow waist band. And I love the freshness of the whiteness for the 30 degree plus spring days Brisbane has been having. I'm especially digging my fresh hair and it makes my want to wear pretty soft colours.
Now to get cracking on some tops ( after I finish my dress for the wedding)!

Giveaway, Spreading the Love

Hey peeps. I have a few patterns to pass along to anyone that loves them. I have been blogging for a little over a year now and I feel it's time to spread the love.
I write blogs in my head and more times than not I don't get around to posting them. Like very fabulous acquisitions from op shops, garage sales, markets and Nanas. Or the clothes I make for my kids and other family members. The garments I have made quickly and that don't seem very interesting. Or that I have started to make clothes for profit (abet a bit slowly).
I have been meaning to host a giveaway and while spring cleaning my sewing area ( and it needed it, I have 4 large boxes just of fabric scraps and remnants that I don't know what to do with; any ideas?), I thoughtfully grabbed some patterns for your pleasure.

The Last 3 Days of Frocktober

The last 3 days of Frocktober and it is bitter sweet. I love a challenge, but this girl needs to re-wear some of these frocks and I need some separates. One major thing I took away from Self Stitched September is that I need more separates. What I took away from Frocktober is that a frock is not always appropriate attire. So folks while I love frocking up it was nice to slip into a skirt and tee today. Here is the last 3 days.
Day 29. A 1953 dress, made from McCall's 3358. I bloody well love this dress and especially how quickly and easily it came together. It was my first attempt at a sweetheart neckline and I love it. I look tough eh? I feel like a cross between Wade and Wanda from Cry Baby here. I am loving my hair quiff style, very rock and roll. Worn on this day with my fret belt.

Day 30. We rose early and headed to the beach for a few hours. Aside from having to keep 2 eyes on 3 kids it was lovely and relaxing. I am wearing what I feel is a pacific Island dress from the 70's. I actually met a girl at a gig who was wearing the same dress, same colour just a different print, so I had to ask her about it and it turns out it was her mums. Aww, I love that. My mum didn't keep any of what I think are her cool clothes. Although she does like to tell me that she wore something similar once!!

Day 31. Last day. I made this hot little 70's halter neck dress the day before from some very cool and vivid rainbow zig zag striped fabric from Michael Miler. Made from Style 4755. either this dress was again really fast to put together or I'm just getting damn good at this dress making business. I love the pleats at the bust line of this dress. I added a row of yellow zig zag and I think I'd like to add some more, maybe orange and red, cover all the warm colours.

Frocktober Powers On.

Ah, I wish Frocktober would never end, I feel special wearing a different dress everyday. I can't keep up the pace though. I want to go back and wear some again. It is a great way to confirm my suspicions about some dresses being on their way out of my wardrobe and others confirming their places as faves.
Day 22. Off to an all day Hen's do. I made this dress this week on a whim. I wanted something sparkly and this frock does not disappoint. Made from simplicity 8498 from 1972 from some itching metallic fabric and odd length of vintage trim from my stash. The dress came together really quickly but the hem did not behave, it was very slippery and hard to get straight. I ended up sticking a bit if horsehair in the hair to help give it some structure. Check out my fabulous 1960's sparkly shoes that I found in their box in perfect condition

Day 23. Chilling in my pony dress.

Day 24. Back to school on Monday in my candy stripes.

Day 25. I had a really long skirt from Libby that was being neglected. I chopped it saving the fabulousness of the border print and made a bodice from Style 3746 from 1972. I like the result and love this neck line.

Day 26. Two installments because it was one of my bff's birthday and Pete requested a birthday frock and my husband and I went out (on a school night) to see a show.
I had been wanting to make a sailor dress for a while and had a 1950's pattern that I was planning to use, but then I came across Simplicity 5349 from 1973. I have been digging the style of the 70's dresses lately so rolled with it. I attached the collar wrong a couple of times because I didn't fully read the instructions and had to unpick it. I also attached it right and unpicked it in shear confusion and frustration!! If it didn't happen this way this dress would have been super fast to make. I love it and can't wait to rock it again.

Day 26.5. My only brand new, purchased dress from Bettie Page brand. I love this frock. I spent the whole day under a cape at the hairdressers changing my do from safe mummy to fabulous!! A little Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams inspired do. It has been 15years since I've been a blonde. It instantly changes the way my dresses look and I love that! My husband and I had a fab time at the Powerhouse catching John Waters show "This Filthy World".

Day 27. My pineapple dress with the very fabulous back. I would wear this dress all the time except I have to wear these disposable bra stickers to hold the girls in place.

Day 28. Another pony dress. I dig this style with the low scooped back and plan on making a dress with some sweet pink lace for a wedding coming up soon. Ginger styled me, Harry Potter style. Isn't she cute in her boy shorts ( picked the fabric herself), Harry Potter glasses and chop stick for a wand.

I had to share these two last days of Frocktober asap. My little Ginger is getting to be a bloody brilliant photographer. Sigh.

Day 20. Dead on the grass. I love the pop art filter on my camera and I love my beaded peacock bag too. My frocks are often too busy to team with pearler. My Fly me to the Moon dress.

Day 21. Rita's courting frock. This was Rita's favourite and mine too.

Next time you see me I'll be wearing a new frock and sporting a new do. Excited!!

Day 18 of Frocktober

This day gets a mention on its lonesome because I made this frock the day before.

It's a very busy picture, but I thought the dress perfectly suited what we call the Ladies Lounge because of the lovely ladies with a shade of green, adorning the walls, coffee table and cushion.

Made from simplicity 6672 from 1976 (I think). I used some fabulous t shirt fabric from the same era ( I think again), which I've had for ages and have been waiting for the right pattern to present itself. This dress was a breeze to make. I love using this fabric because i don't have to finish the edges, but it frustrates me at the same time because it doesn't behave like cotton does. I also loved being able to use a couple of massive buttons.
I leave you with a couple of pictures of my lovely offspring. The 3 kids playing in a bookcase on it's side, a photo op too good to miss. Ginger tells me she is "just scratching" her nose.

The frocks are fun.

Day 10. An op shopped frock. I love the coral colour, with contrasting black lace trims.

Day 11. Purchased from an antique shop for a steal, it looked unloved, scrunched up in the back of a cupboard, stained. But this fresh white embroidered linen came up a treat.

Day 12. My sundae dress.

Day 13. Another op shopped dress. I love this style with the tie bow and the flick skirt. But damn it it is hot sticky polyester.

Day 14. My religous frock made for mother's day. I am soooo not happy in this photo.

Day 15. A Rita dress. I love the print and style of this dress. In love. We did a bit of a fun photo shoot.

Stella is my first born my muse, my style aficionado. She is the first one to compliment my outfits and will constantly pull together some stunning combinations. She has a great sense of style and perfect comedian timing. She will be a force to be reckoned with. Here Stella is rocking her 70's skateboard riding style. Check out Ginny, both her shorts and singlet are on back the front. Just by chance i got this pic of Stella posing with our new mini BBQ. I will have a big photo shoot one day with Stella showing us her super vintage darling style.

I spotted this at the markets and knew we had to have it. It's not often I bring home treasure and Matt gets excited about it,but today he did. A 50's/60's mini BBQ in it's original box. fabulous. Oh yes. It's going to be a great summer, lounging around in my kaftan having a mini BBQ.

Nine days of Frocktober

Everyday this month I am wearing a frock and I love it.

Weeeee, what a great start to Frocktober. Day 1. Rita's pineapple dress makes me want to twirl. For those that don't know I acquired some dress from a woman named Rita. Her mother had made them and she wore 2 often, while her husband was courting her and 2 never saw the light of day, she never wore them. Yah for me. This is the pineapple dress' first outing, she is fabulous. I felt like I need a fluffer under her, but I don't have one.

Day 2. I bought this 1950's day dress from an op shop during SSS so this is the first time I have worn her. A perfect frock for a day at the fair. It was a wild and windy day, I was constantly fighting with the wind lifting the fullness of this dress up around my shoulders. Worth it though. And doesn't Ginger look adorable in her vintage polka dot dress. I totally tricked her into wearing it as she normally likes her boy shorts. She stole the show, people stopped to look at her on the rides. Cute a button.

Day 3. I have had this dress for years, (I think I bought it when I was breast feeding), but it's the first time I have worn it. It has lived in Japan for a while while my body belonged to my babies. I like to think of it as my secretary dress. It has a suede feel with a towel feeling trim.

Day 4. My lime dress. Made last year some time. I wasn't digging it when I wore it this week. I'd usually just change, but I felt like I had to wear it all day. Very practical for a bust mummy though, with big pockets for stuff and a full skirt for sitting on the ground.

Day 5. Another of Rita's dresses, also the first time it has been worn. I love the crossed over bodice. Of all my patterns, I do not have one with this look, bummer. I absolutely am in love with this dress.

Day 6. A morning spent at school working with the preppies. I was a little shy having Stella take my photo at school. A dress I have made. I love the leopard but skirt bugs me on this dress. It has a yucky feel to it. I may get around to fixing it one day.

Day 7. I was talking to a Nanna at the local craft shop the previous day about crocheting and I was inspired to dig out this nanna number. I got lots of comments on my dress on this day. This frock conjured up memories of people's grandmas. Oh, isn't that nice. I took direction from 3 year old Ginger for the photo on this day. I had to say many made up words and pull funny faces and poses.

Day 8. It was stormy morning and I wanted to wear something a little warm. Here is my take on the suburban flannie. My 1970's shift dress mad with a cross hatch checked flannel fabric. Worn with not Ug boots, but Japanese tabby boots.

Day 9. It is going to be the summer of the kaftan at my place. Sipping cocktails around the pool, looking fabulous. Last weekend at the local flee markets I came across a lady selling clothes out of a box. It was one woman's take on leisure wear through a couple of decades. Kaftans beat trackies hands down. I picked up a couple of kaftans, moo moos and little tops all for $1 each. Happy day. I popped into the Petrie historical village markets this morning and was turning heads in this flamboyant frock, or it may have been Stella in her 1970's Hang Ten shorties worn with her led Zeppelin tshirt. Very styling in a 70's skateboard riding kinda way. Love this dress, I may just have to go and lounge around now.

SSS ' 11 Days 28, 29, 30.

These last few days of September have been crazy.
Day 28, was spent looking after a couple of extra kids, while trying to sew some things for someone else. (I'll blog that later, as it's bit exciting). I wore a black skirt I made years ago. It is looking a little worse for wear, but is very practical. I will have to make myself another one. Now I'm a more accomplished sewist, it will be practical, and fabulous. Ginger was "helping" me make dinner.

Day 29, the day before Alby's 6th birthday and his party. I literally spent the whole day cleaning and preparing for the onslaught. And was up all night making cake. Our downstairs area is also home to my sewing corner, so I had to put alot of stuff out of the line of fire. I wore a tshirt I made and a pair of dusty pink cords that I cut off years ago and found recently. I wonder why I cut them off.....

Day 30 and the day of the party. What was I thinking letting 12, 6-8 year olds tear through my house? It was alright really, Alby had fun. I don't thinks kids parties are ever fun for Mummys. I had a mini disaster when my frankfurts for mini hot dogs cooked too long, split and curled. Thank goodness for mother in laws. Mine was able to duck to the shops and then keep a watchful eye on them dang little things while they cooked. The kids love mini hot dogs!
I wore a recently made high waisted pencil skirt, in a lovely shade of blue. I do really dig this shape, and it was very comfortable as the most fitted part is higher than my tum, which tends to bulge after hot dogs, punch and lollies! I will do a separate post on this skirt, with pattern details, as it is fabulous.
Here is my 6 year old and I after the guests had all gone. I made Al's shorts last night. I would like to make them shorter, but he likes them this length. O well, at least he will grow into them. Dr Zeus, cute. He loves them. And I love him.

30 days of wearing items that I made myself wasn't too difficult, but it does highlight the fact that most of the things I make are too fabulous for cleaning, being sick in and basic lazing around the house. I may need a few humble house dresses. And I definately need more separates.
I thoroughly enjoyed Self Stitch September. For the joy of wearing things I made, (I feel a real sense of pride) and checking in on other SSS'ers to admire their fabulous garments and style.
Next month, eek, starting tomorrow is Frocktober. Every day in October I will wear a dress, either made by me, someone else or store bought. I can do this easily, but I fear I will have the same dilemma as SSS, with days at home. I think I will just pretend for October that I am a Stepford wife, don an apron from my collection of thrifted aprons. Or better yet, make sure that I do something a little glamorous everyday, to warrant a fabulous frock. I will post my frocks weekly here.

SSS '11 Days 25, 26 and 27

I have a few moments spare while the potato chippies are cooking to share my last few Self Stitched September outfits.

Day 25, impressively, a few days after purchasing this apple fabric I actually made the intended garment. Made from Butterick 3865, from the 70's. The packaging says it's fast and easy and it was. I was worried about the front zip. but for no good reason. I accidentally matched the apples on the front seam pretty well. I love the waist band, it's super comfy. I am also wearing a tshirt I made.

Day 26, I wore the dress I made for the first day of spring last year. There is a little bit of an effort is wearing this as it is hefty to iron. I sometimes think I want to change the skirt of this dress from gathered to swingy. Maybe one day. It is easier and more exciting to make something new!! I almost forgot to take a photo. I only remembered when it was time to bath the kiddies.

Day 27, I am wearing this breezy little camisole I whipped up last night from a early 90's pattern.. The fabric is very soft and the graphics are very 80's. I am trying to find a good pattern for making a few little tops for Brisbane's hot summer. This one is ok, I need to have the patience to make my own bias binding for the purpose of finishing tops like this one. It was nice to get into my jeans after wearing so may skirts, the weathers turned a little cool.

SSS '11, Day 24 Sundaes on a Saturday

I have had this Michael Miller, Sundae fabric in my possession for a while and have finally made it up into a little halter neck dress.

A friends Mum gave me a pile of her old patterns mostly from the 70's. All totally wearable and summery and mostly my size. Made from Style 4859 from 1975. It was a cinch to make a really quick. I think I will have to make at least one more for the summer.

It is not the most flattering for a curvaceous bosom, but then the 70's were never about ample cleavage, so I'm okay with the way it looks. Next time I make it, I will add a couple of inches to the hem as I don't like showing my knees much.

SSS '11, Days 20, 21 and 23

I am enjoying this spring weather and the extra energy I have this week.
Day 20, was a spring clean day and I went for a go to outfit, a skirt and a tank. I was so involved in my spring cleaning that I neglected to take a photo of it on my body, but I got a shot of the fabulous 80's fabric that I made my skirt from. I love these colours. I wish I made a more swishy skirt instead of a straight, oh well.

Day 21. I made this skirt just the night before, from a 20 cent curtain. I really wanted a swishy skirt. It took me an hour in total. It is made from a 70's pattern cut on the bias. I love it, the colours are very springy. Go to tank top here. I did a spot of fabric shopping with a couple of lady friends who I will make some garments for. A bit exciting. I was a little naughty, I couldn't resist this bold apple fabric that I will make up into a skirt (today I think).

Day 22. I decided to take the kids to Bribie Island for a frolic on the beach and went for a nautical skirt that I whipped up. I had been wanting to make a border skirt on a diagonal, but I didn't have enough fabric left over from Alby's bedroom curtains. Made from a simple 60's skirt pattern. I'm hoping the fabric softens up a bit. It stands up by itself. I look knackered, because I am. Kids, driving, beach, ice creams, op shops; phew!

SSS '11, Days 16, 17, 18 and 19

Yah, for school holidays. No more lunches made in the mornings and dinners made at lunch time. No more racing out the door, hopping to get to school before 2nd bell. For 2 weeks anyway. Although it should be a quiet time of rest, with 3 kiddies and a spring cleaning project started, there's no rest for this busy mama.

On Saturday, Day 16, we went to a friends BBQ. I am wearing my Harry high pants on this glorious spring day, chilling on the grass, with Ginger taking my photo. Later that night my husband and I went to see Custard play at the Powerhouse. It was a sit down affair, very strange thing, I am so use to shaking my groove thing to Custard.

Sunday was scorching hot and very hazy, it felt like a summer's day. Day 17, I wore my Religious Frock. I hung around at home for most of the day, but then met up with a girlfriend to see Gentle Ben and his Sensitive Side, a super sexy sounding Brisbane band, all the way into the city a relaxing 50minute train ride. It was a great show and so many lovely spring dresses to admire. I received a few compliments on my little number, always noice.

Day 18. This is controversial. I just finished these either late 1940's or early 1950's regulation trouser's from Vogue 6285, last week, and I though they looked ok. And a bonus they are super comfy, but I had 2 people close to me tell me 'honestly' that they are terrible, my own mother included. The ankles look a little strange, I think they are tad too long, but I like them!! I probably won't wear them again though. Also the white shoes were the wrong choice. It was early, I was on my way to my mum's and didn't really check the complete look, eek.

Today, day 19 was spent cleaning curtains, making curtains and buy curtain hanging fixtures. Alby's room is almost finished, yah, it's getting exciting. In a way Stella's room will get a mini makeover as Alby was crowding the glamour of that girl's room. Oh, I wore a 1960's, 6 gored skirt, navy blue with little red anchors and white dots. Comfortable.

Please be honest (but not blunt or cruel) about my controversial trousers.

SSS '11 Days 13, 14 and 15

Phew, I have been crook as a dog the last couple of days and unwilling to post my outfits, until now.

Day 14, on location in my Diner dress with my Julie belt, a busy day spent taking the kiddies to gymnastics and a little fruit shopping. Looking perky before going down hill fast a dinner time.

Day 15 a 1970's t-shirt worn with jeans, kinda plain but I was feeling horrible and I wanted to be comfy.

Day 16, a picture with the family pooch, Sonny. I'm still feeling rotten, so wanted to be super comfy, which my horses dress definitely is.
Must drag myself to bed with a good book. I would much rather be sewing but my condition will not allow me to.

You'll go Riding with the Horses

That's the way it's gonna be little Darling..... An invitation to a day at the Races and some vintage horse themed fabric meant that I made myself a new frock.

Made from McCall's 5891 from 1961. A simple yet stunning dress with a low back. I opted to line the dress with some cotton voile for modesty, so I left off the facing. Because the horse fabric was vintage I had to slim the skirt shape a little, omit the pockets and make a contrasting belt. I chose to put the bow detail on the back above the zip just to cover that little gap and made the belt bowed, because I really do think the bow is sweet. I also added horse hair braid in the hem to give a nice full skirt. I do really like this dress and I think I will make a slim skirt version. Va voom.

I literally made this dress the day before and was really hoping I didn't stuff anything up. Thankfully it was all smooth sailing. Looking at the pictures, there are a couple of fitting issues with the bodice, I am always slouching though, so perhaps it is a lot to do with posture.

I tried to dress for a warm spring day, but the weather has turned bitterly cold and damn windy. Day 9 of SSS '11 includes my skirt and top.
When I made the skirt I added a couple of inches to the seems to allow for my plentiful hips, however it was unnecessary and now the fabulous pockets go round past the side seams. I have been meaning to make this 1950's skirt again and blog about how fabulous it is, it just hasn't happened yet. I always have a stack of projects lined up in my head half of which I don't get around to.
The 1970's top I made when I was breast feeding and it never fit my ample bosom. As a result I gave it to my sister. Now she is breast feeding and I get it back. You gotta love sisters. I will make one like this for myself though, or a halter neck dress.

I've spent the morning at Al's Prep classroom again, so opted for this straight seemingly conservative striped skirt that I have made. On closer inspection though you will see that it is a fab zip print. I love this print by Henry Alexander ( I think). I cannot, no matter my intention, pass by a novelty print. Have you noticed my necklace? One of the best presents I have received ever! Sarah Jessica wore the same pendant in Sex and the City. There you have SSS '11, day 8.

SSS '11 Day 7, Don't Leave Me Hanging on the Telephone

Lunch with a Girlfriend today meant that I could comfortably get away with wearing my gorgeous, juvenile girl dress for SSS '11 Day 7. I love the fabric of the skirt of this dress and held onto it for a few years before I made this early 1970's dress. I also made the little yellow wrist purse I am holding. There is no being subtle in this bright number.

I'm going to the races this Saturday, so I simply must make a new frock!!!

Here is SSS '11 Day 6. I have a busy day ahead of me, with all that usual mummy stuff plus some DIY renovations. I am putting some lovely stripes on Alby's bedroom walls today, hopefully I can share some pics soon. The 2 paneled skirt, I made quickly an eon ago from a baby cot sheet, trimmed with bias binding. And the t-shirt I screen printed an even longer eon ago. It's a picture of Stella as a Clown. Ginger is also wearing a SSS ensemble today. Mummy made shorts with little kitty cats on them and every little rocker needs a Led Zeppelin tee, this was also printed by me.

Hey peps, 2 Self Stitched September days in one, as yesterdays Father's Days celebration got a wee bit boozy.

A total Colette look here, with a beignet skirt and a sorbetto top. Very Sunshiney. I had to sit down, so little Ginger could fit me in the frame. SSS '11 day 4.

Today, being Monday, I wanted to be super comfy, which this frock is. If only it wasn't so painful to iron worn with some dashing pink accessories. Again, I had to be smaller so Ginger could fit me in frame. And there you have SSS '11 day 5.

SSS '11 Day 3, Lemony Snicket

Today is a relaxing day at home with the whipper snappers. A very creative photo today by Alby age 5. Day 3 of SSS'11.
I am wearing a tiny gingham check full skirt that ended up being too big for my waist, but lovely low and comfy on my hips. It was made from a 1950's pattern that originally had buttons up the front, but that reminded me of a skirt my mum had in the 80's, so I opted to insert a zip at the back.

A perfect day for climbing the tree with some cousins, or just hanging out with your furry chest out.

SSS '11 Day 2, Fly me to the moon.....

This dress makes me feel like traveling....... So Ginger and I tracked down the Brisbane Bus Lines depot, because their graphics are in keeping with the 60's mode of transport feel and this dress is Pan Am 60's, to have a little photo shoot. Can you believe my three year old took these shots, clever little chook.

This dress is made from McCall's 6139 from 1961. I love the kimono sleeves and the the bound pocket openings. The position of the pockets is great too, it feels like a coat when I put my hands in them. I used a cotton spandex fabric for this dress, I chose this fabric solely on colour, this apple green is yummy. I think the stretch factor is good for the bodice and bad for the the pockets, which gape a little. Also, the fabric is not so drapey, which I didn't think would mater so much for this 4 gore dress, however the photos tell me differently as the skirt kinda juts out rather than hugs my shape, you know what I mean?

SSS' 11, Day 1, Love is in the air

I love spring. It's the best time of year for me. It is not unbearably hot as a Brisbane summer is and not too cool that I have to cover up all my fab frocks. My toes are warm and so is my heart. The only down fall is those pesky swooping mummy magpies protecting their babies. Terrifies me so. So much in fact that I duck for cover at the sound of a willy wag tails little beating wings. Phew!
I have at the last minute decided to take part in Self Stitched September, as a way for me to think more about what I wear.
This is day one.
I have spent the morning volunteering at Alby's Prep classroom, helping kids with their alphabet and sounds, playing games basically. I like to think that if I were a teacher I would be very preppy. Here is casual preppy. Self made top and skirt from a remnant linen given to me, both from the 70's I believe. I had a lovely compliment on my outfit today and it was very satisfying to say that "I made this".

Dreaming Of Chanel

There is an exhibition on in Brisbane at the moment at QUT Garden's Point, to coincide with Mercedes Fashion week called Dreaming of Chanel. It is a only a snippet of The Darnell Collection, a 195 year history of women's fashion.
An American woman, Doris Darnell collected costumes of yesteryear and wore them flamboyantly in her day to day life and got quite a reputation for it, as a result people gave her fabulous clothing from their attics and their stories. Her entire collection was given to her. Doris, all those years ago had the foresight to document the stories of these garments and the women who wore them.
While Doris was well into her senior years she bequeathed her collection onto her god daughter here in Australia. She sent several boxes, 1200 kilograms and over 3000 frocks and accessories. She had tried to donate the collection to a museum somewhere in America, but they only wanted the Gucci's, Prada's, Dior's, all the clothes of designers whose stories are already told. Doris wanted the collection to stay together, as they tell a story about unknown seamstresses and dressmakers. It was a full bodied account of what women wore. The collection tells the stories of women who have lived, laughed, loved and lost. It is AMAZING.
Her God daughter is Charlotte Smith (what a lucky woman), who is keeping her collection alive. Since she has been the beneficiary of the collection it has grown in size to over 6000 items and countless more stories. Charlotte Smith has written a 2 books about the collection. The latest is "Dreaming of Chanel". It is a collection of the stories of the women who once wore these frocks. Rather than photos of frocks the book is fabulously illustrated by Grant Cowan. I think my love of patterns stems from the illustrations on the packets.
I love that Charlotte Smith and the Darnell Collection has given these Garments another life. I have mega wardrobe envy. I love to get a frock with a story. I love being the custodian of Rita's Dresses I will always think of Rita and the stories she has told me when I wear her dresses. With the Darnell Collection, dressmakers like Ivy Spooner from Towoomba, Queensland and Kate Ludwig from Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, who perhaps would only be remembered by their families, will now be known by people for generations to come.
I was lucky enough to coincide my visit to this exhibition with a visit by Charlotte Smith, who was talking about the collection. I seriously want to be best friends with this woman.
If anyone is in Bris Vegas, you have to see this exhibition. It is on until October 16th. Otherwise look for this book, "dreaming of Chanel" is amazing!!


Barbra Coty, 1951.

In Australia in the late 40's, Barbra Coty joined a weekly sewing circle at the church hall and proved to be so gifted that she won a scholarship to East Sydney Tech College. This is her Graduation dress. This dress literally being inspired by Dior's La Corolle silhouette, inspired by the petals of a flower as each skirt panel is the shape of a petal. Fabulous. Barbra couldn't find spotted silk, so she screen printed her own.

These pants make me feel a little like a Spanish bull fighter and I like it.

The pattern used is Advance 7899, undated, but the graphics look 50's or early 60's to me. The description is Misses Sports Separates. This is the most glamorous sports attire I have every seen.

*Sigh* If only the world of gym bunnies and the sporty look wannabes looked like this, rather than the sea of Lorna Jane active wear and ill fitting, inappropriate leggings.
These pants are made from a length of fabric my Uncle once used as a photographic back drop, polyester content here and a little shiny. I will definitely being making these again in a well thought out fabric choice.
I didn't make any adjustments to this pattern and to my surprise they are pretty awesome. The pattern called for 2, 12 inch zippers on both sides, I was only able to buy a longer zipper and only needed to use one. I love the way the waist is defined, much like a Collete Beignet skirt, only higher.

It was worth the wait, I purchased this pattern off ebay in may and only received it at the end of July. As you can see I also made the top. The spotty version has been altered to accommodate my smaller bust, because as you can see from the bluebird version, it was just too big. I need to play more with the sizing as it ended up a tad too small for wearing with anything but mega high waisted pants.
I am loving these pants.

Top Heavy

I have been on this blouse crusade lately. I got a new pair of jeans (which fit like a glove) and which I needed tops to wear with. Winter just doesn't inspire me, but spring is just around the corner here in Bris Vegas and I will be ready!!!! This is just the start my friends, of a bunch of fab tops.
I usually have a lot of trouble finding jeans to fit my booty and my waist consecutively, but not anymore. Levi's has a Curve ID range and if like me you struggle to find jeans, then may I recommend you 'av a look.
I have made this 1970's top, whose pattern details I just don't have with me (I lent this pattern to my sister). It was very quick and is super comfy. The bottom seam keeps on rolling up. Anyone have any tips on how to fix this without an over locker??

70's style tshirt

I've made a couple of Sorbetto tops by Collette, and will definitely knock out a few more. This first one, I omitted the plea,t as I just managed to squeeze my size onto the scrape of fabric. It is made from a vintage cotton, maybe from the late 50's. I love the muted tones and muted flower pattern, I wish I had 4 metres of this. And the second top is old fabric again, very synthetic, maybe 60's or 70's. It is light and drapey and perfect for this top.

This here is a dress I made for a friend to wear to a formal event where the theme is 'A night at the races, French style.' I immediately thought of Audrey Hepburn and did a mental scan of my most fabulous patterns and thought of Vogue 9264 from 1958.

It has been made in a gun metal grey satin, that is unlike any I've seen before, the inside of this fabric feels alot like cotton.
This dress is a sewing achievement for me, as I did a bunch of things I've never done before. Firstly a muslin of the bodice.
The lovely tie at the front is and the front sleeve is are both part of the front side piece, making a t shape. It was tricky stopping and starting, above and below seams and clipping the curves in all the right places. Eeek.
The sleeves have gussets, which totally blew my mind for a while. I'm way too traumatised to go into details, but I got there in the end.
Because this a dress for a formal event, I didn't want any top stitching, so all my hems are hand stitched, including a horse hair braid in the skirt's hem. I love the effect of the horse hair braid and can see myself using it alot. I attempted to hand stitch the zip, but the satin looked bubbly and quite awful, so I did my first ever invisible zip. I didn't get any pictures, but trust me, it looks invisible!

I love it and so does Jo. I will get more pictures of Jo all done up as she will look even more stunning with all the right accessories!!
I was keen to try the other version of this dress, so I did. I have used a vintage linen with a Dalmatian spot and a contrasting tie in pink silk. Only because I was a little short on spotty fabric, but I like the result. Can you bear it when you don't have enough fabric? I much preferred working in this fabric. The dress is lovely to wear. Love it also.

Here is my take on an Aussie Icon the "Flannie". I found this awesome printed flannelette fabric and had to use it this winter. I was limited by the length of the fabric and decided to use this 1970's Butterick 3714 A-line dress pattern. Totally cannot see them, but I'm wearing Japanese Tabby Boots, which always make me feel super fast.

On another note, I have been trying to be more organized and have sorted my patterns into their eras. This is the result. A newly moved tower of ports, filled with patterns. Bar one, which has some fabric.

Playing Dress Ups with Libby's Frocks

I have Libby's Frocks. They are mostly long 70's polyester numbers. Some get it right and Jo had first dibs on most of them ( I will have to get some photos), and some are fun, but ghastly.
This is my favourite dress that typifies the style of the day. Italian made, it looks as though it has never been worn. The colours are amazing and the drop waist fit is very flattering. The first few photos are keepers, some of the others are for the dress up box and others I may make into blouses or skirts.


Only polyester number that I will keep.

I was disappointed these next frocks were mostly polyester, as I made a vow years ago to avoid the stuff. In Queensland's heat it is not worth the sweat. I'm all for suffering for style, polyester is a new level though.

Girl In a Floppy Hat

Earlier this week folks, I finished a screenprint. Quite an achievement for moi, I have printed in dribs and drabs since having babies. But now I have the taste for it. I hope to crank out a number of prints and have a little exhibition in the near future. I forgot how exciting it was to lay the colours, upon colours and watch the picture come alive. Sigh.
I had the fore thought to document the process, all but one colour ( I think).
This print was screenprinted on wallpaper which proved to be quite annoying as it kept wanting to roll up upon itself, it shrunk a little after the first colour and I had to wait days between colours as the ink did not want to dry. Anyhow, here is most of the colours, layer upon layer, for you viewing pleasure.

I went into a dark damp cave that belongs to a woman who has collected treasure for 70 years. I was in awe. The smell was exciting.

My favourite, the colours are amazing.

There was treasure on every wall, in every corner, it reach out to me and beckoned for me to explore all it had to offer. I am extremely jealous that my cousin in law lives in this house and gets to explore it's secrets everyday. She gets to delve into Libby's mind to hear of her adventures. Sigh.
When Libby was a teenager her mother encouraged her to learn the domestic duties that were expected of young girls. Libby was not interested and her father encouraged her education. She studied at Summerville House and met other girls like herself. Girls that wanted adventure.

Libby went on to be a teacher, then the first woman High School Principal in Queensland. She later left that career and travelled to Japan, learned the language and her specialty field became Japanese children's stories. She started to collect Asian artifacts, long before it came chic. Libby travelled to many other Asian countries collecting Buddha statues from temples that have since been torn down. Temple doors, hand painted Mexican artifacts. It is mind bogglingly beautiful.

Lesbia, or Libby, as I know her has only ever let a few people into her render clad 1930's Queenslander home. This was the first time she has let treasure leave with someone. Her house is dark, there is not a wall that is not covered in pictures, there are books everywhere. I feel supremely lucky to have been let into this world and to have been allowed to take things home and give them a new life and a new story.

Upstairs was amazing. Downstairs was mad. Books everywhere. I founds art magazines from the late 1800's. I felt awful touching them with my dusty fingertips and made Jo put them somewhere high and dry. Some books looked ancient. One title "Dante's Decent into Hell", was massive, spooky and ancient. Apparently Libby sold some art works to buy it. Oh it gave me chills.
I was allowed to go through massive piles of home decorating and fashion magazines and here is a taste of what I bought home.

As well a all the inspiring books and magazines I got the singer sewing machine Libby's Mother bought her and Libby never used. She is a beauty, so neat and inconspicuous, folding into a little table. Ah, I love it.

Next weekend Jo and Libby will go through her many trunks and hunt down all her fabulous dresses from bygone decades, for me!

Stella loved the books and all the curiosities as well and came home with a few Roald Dahl books that she doesn't have in her collection yet.

What an interesting woman and an interesting life and what a mammoth story her collection tells.

Is it a bird? No, just my fabulous cape people.
Made from McCall's 2337 from 1970. It was very simple to make, once I started. I went to a fabulous fabric sale as mentioned by Summer Flies at Sew Darn Tired, and purchased this pee green wool for a bargain price. (The satin blanket edging around it cost more.) It was almost a circle with a couple of arm holes and an unusual shape cut out that required a dart for the hood and created the shoulders.

It was smash hit at a recent family bbq, so.....I have also made a red one for my soon to be sister in law and modeled by an armless, legless Bouncing Betty. It looks great with a brooch to hold it in place rather than a hand and perfect for throwing over a jumper for extra warmth.

It's been a long time between posts as my usb cord is stuffed and I just got myself a usb card reader today. I have been a very very busy Mummy. Lots of sewing, screen printing and building myself a little business. More of that some other time.
Very exciting news though.... I am making a fabulous dress for my cousin in law, Jo. Jo lives with an elderly lady, Libby, that spent her life travelling round the world, instead of settling down and cooking and sewing for her family as was expected of women back in that era. She has no heirs to her vast collection of things, has heard about my sewing and fashion obsession and has offered me her Singer sewing machine that her mother bought her, never used. Her pile of Old Vogue Magazines, not sure of the dates. Jo said the magazine on top is a catalogue of patterns for mail order. And Libby has said I can go through her wardrobe and choose any clothes that I want. Libby is 89. She doesn't throw much out. There may be clothes at least 60 years old. Let's hope some of them fit me or that I can make them fit. I am having kittens I am so excited. It is a long week waiting til Sunday!!

My new toy. What a beauty.

1950's Helvetia Lemair

I found her in an op shop yesterday, and normally I don't look at sewing machines, my obsession needs to stop somewhere, but there she was in an inconspicuous looking cream box, waiting to be unveiled. I was feeling curious this day, so I opened the box. Took my breath away. A 1950's Lemair sewing machine. The name says it all Lem AIR, and the shape is magnificently stream line. She works, but I am yet to thread her properly. Made by Helvetia in Sydney Australia. She is beautifully preserved, with a bunch of strange looking feet. Tis my mission today to get her moving.

In the same shop, I found this totally fabulous Vogue Pattern, a Pierre Cardin design. It is mod fantastic. I'm not sure this style would suit me, but those pockets are brilliant.

On a different note. The story telling chairs I helped make for Alby's school fete Auction fetched the highest bids of all class objects a whopping $420 for the two. A job well done.

Fun times in Melbourne

Sooo, Matt and I went to Melbourne recently for our wedding anniversary. Our first weekend away with no kids. Although I missed them, it was a nice change to not be limited by routine and set eating, bathing and sleeping pattens.

I love Melbourne. Let me count the ways.
One; one of my besties lives in Melbourne.
Two, for the beautiful old buildings and the cobbled lined streets. There is alot of controversy and sadness surrounding the demolition of heritage buildings in Brisbane, making way for new developments.
Three, the trams. I can only wonder what Brisbane would be like today if the trams were still in operation.
Four, the yummy yummy food. It is everywhere in all corners and stretches of the city and surrounding suburbs.

I had no time for shopping in Melbourne but plenty of time for eating and drinking. My 3 favourite places to eat were, The Breakfast Club for breakfast at Northcote. I had Carlos' Eggs, best brekky ever. Lunch at Ichini at St Kilda, best bento box I've had outside of Japan. Dinner at the Vege Kitchen, at Northcote, where the 'Intention is Love'. Two Taiwanese sisters make their own tofu and soy milk and offer a banquet of vegetarian yumminess. I saw two burly men that looked like seasoned meat eater stroll in and go giddy with excitement over the menu. Loved it. Even Matt, who calls tofu toad food, loved it.

The lane ways lived up to their reputation, I think you need a holiday just to visit them. This piece was fresh and wet and one of my favourites that I saw.

Matt and I drove the Great Ocean road, well a bit of it. We got as far as the lighthouse that is in the TV show, Round the Twist. So pretty and such a contrast to the business of the city. On the way home we stopped at The Wool Shed Museum at Geelong. There was an excellent exhibition there about real life Australian Femme Fatales. Very interesting and some of the 1940's mug shots were a little spooky and a far cry from the glamorous pictures I usually look at from this era. Geelong by the water was really pretty.

This is funny because it looks like Matt is skipping, he is not.

We went to the footy, of course. It just so happened the Lions were playing. It was good to see those boys in full form and not on the the telly, if you know what I mean.

The Blackman, which is part os the Art Series hotels, was awesome. We got upgraded to the 17th floor and had a great view of Albert Park. We felt on top of the world, baby! The room was lush and the location was very central. A perfect and very glamorous choice.

Pete and I went to Outre Gallery , it was so good to see these prints in real life and inspired me to pull my finger out and print again (that's another blog). I could have spent thousands there. I bought a book for the kids, that I will definitely be sharing some pages from soon. We refuelled at a totally cool cafe, 1000 Pound Bend. I wish 1000 pound Bend was down the road from my place, sigh!

Melbourne in Autumn is so pretty. I have vowed to visit this awesome city again soon.

A 1940's Tea Dress, and seeking advice/opinions.

I won a fabulous competition recently and couldn't wait to sew up the dress of the McCall's 6835 from the 1940's. Especcially after I saw Esz's dress from a similar pattern over at Kitty's Drawings, whom I won the pattern from. It was suprisingly simple. I love the scalloped neckline.

But Alas, those 1940's lass' have much narrower hips than I and it's too snug for my child bearing hips. I am reluctant to unpick my handy work on this little number. Even though I love the tea coloured polka dot fabric that was op shopped ages ago, it's just not my usual vivid choice. I will make it again and allow for my width in a colour that is more me.

Another competition pattern that I won from The Long and Winding Bobbin has been made up, alas with even more disastrous results. This Fabulous pencil skirt is Simplicity 1688. Yhe fabric is sunair, I've never heard of this, but it has a lovely fee and a great texture. When I Google sun-air, I get awning sites. I have even lined it in this stunning apple green satin, very fabulous. 24 darts in all, phew!!

It is just not sitting straight or flat. What to do. Does anyone have any tips on fixing the dilemma? Or shall I sacrifice the loveliness of the side wrap and put a center zip in it?

Urgh, I was a little crook recently and have been a bit uneventful. Until now. Back to being a busy Mummy.

I have finally sewn up a dress from one of Rita's patterns. McCall's 6770 from 1963. A slim sleeveless dress with a three gore skirt. Scooped neckline, curved seaming in the bodice. Skirt has gathers at the front and has a back pleat. I changed the side zipper to a back one and have used a zip with a lovely big gold hoop for easy gripping. I had every intention of doing a lot of invisible stitches and learning how to use my blind hem foot, but as usual, I was just far too impatient and had to wear it yesterday. I love the fabric, it's very kitsch. As usual, my dress is loud and unmissable. This was a very simple pattern and I love love love the look of the straight skirt. I feel very mature. I will definitely make this dress again, in a block colour, and I will (somehow) make the neckline narrower.

The kids school has their 2 yearly fete coning up and this year every class is making something that will go to auction. Alby's teacher Miss Beadman absolutely has to do everything better than anyone else, it's her competitive streak. She has taken a couple of chairs and decoupaged drawings the combined class of grade 1's and Preppies have done and has taken advantage of my skills as a screen printer and sewer and asked me to reupholster the cushions. This is the end result. Quite pleased with them, they are super cute,. I will have to get some photos of the chairs all put together and share them here.

Today is Mother's Day and I hope every Mummy out there has had a great day. I definately have had an awesome day, it's easy when my kids are so darn fabulous. Hubbie has spoilt me rotton I haven't had to lift a finger all day. Alby treated me to a fabulous afternoon at his classroom, at the Mummy's Princess Palour. I got a hand massage, had my nails painted, we made tissue paper flowers and had high tea, all while wearing a tiara. Alby was very adorable.

I went for my first holiday since having babies, 8 years ago, just Matt and I. Four days; the longest time I have spent away from my kids, and we both survived. We went to Melbourne and had awesome weather and an awesome time. It was nice not to have to live to a time frame or routine, at least for a few days. I wouldn't trade being a Mummy for anything in the world!!

The first range is Andy Warhol. Three tshirts designed and screen printed in Brisbane, by moi. I was lucky enough to find some vintage Bonds raglan tshirts, so the editions are small and the sizes and colours are spasmodic.

I've had an overindulgent weekend and now I'm paying for it. I have been grain fee for 2 months now and have been feeling on top of the world, mum. This weekend ever, was my birthday; on top a boozy lunch of bread, I had a creamy pasta for dinner and my fair share of cake. I feel tired and cranky. What better way to cheer myself up than a good ol' fashion rummage in my favourite op shops.
Before I show you today's treasure, I will share my favourite presents, from 2 of my gal pals. Why is it friends get your style more than family?

I almost didn't go into the third and finally op shop on my trawls today, but I hadn't been for a while and I needed that extra pick up. Soooo glad I did, check out the editions to my growing stash, most of the women's patterns are my size and the girl's are perfect size for Stella. Totally bummed about one of the McCall's dress patterns, I had been chasing the style for a while, but the previous owner cut the dress into a skirt and didn't keep the bodices. Damn it! Oh well you win some and you lose some.

The morning of my birthday was spent at the doctors'. Gi Gi has a green stick fracture, very common apparently. She got caught up in one of Alby's rope traps, that he has been loving making lately. Poor sausage. Isn't she cute though in her iddy biddy cast. Ginger chose the colour too.

After lunch, we checked out IMA (Institute of Modern Art). I loved this work, reminds me of the Round Heads that my friend Philip Colley has made.

Ghastly Yellow

This yellow is Ghastly and I like it. It is a really manufacture yellow. I think it has a 70's feel, when colours were borderline offence. Which is perfect for the beignet skirt, which also has a 70's feel.

I have been eyeing off the beignet skirt by Collette Patterns for a while. (I think I first saw it over at Tilly and the Buttons). And like I read today, en route through Fortitude Valley, "The more you think of it, the bigger it gets." It got to the point where I figured I would not stop thinking about it, until I had it in my hot little hands.

Once I figured out what size I might be, I set off to find what seemed to be way too much fabric to make my Beignet skirt, and it was. My local fabric shop had this ghastly yellow, in what feels a little like wool for $2 a metre and the lining was also $2 a metre. The fancy facing was some craft fabric I bought once, with no idea for what it would be used. The 12 lovely buttons are courtesy of Tasia at Sewaholic. I won them for her 200 follower giveaway. (yah)

I can read things 20 times and it does not make sense to me, until I do it. I am a visual learner I guess. Once I got moving on this pattern it was quite easy to make. This skirt had sooo many pattern pieces, but it was worth it, as the fit is bloody awesome. I love the high waist as I am able to wear some shortish tops I have in my wardrobe since "Before Baby" days when my stomach was flat.

Today's top I have had since my Uni days (circa 1996), but I don't think I ever comfortably wore it, it has a band on the bottom that rides up when it is not tucked in. I love it though as it has 1976 printed all over it and that is my birth year. I am wearing my all time favourite belt made of wood with little mother of pearl dots on each piece. It resembles a guitar neck, so I like to call this my fret belt. My hand bag was given to me by my Auntie Deb, her friend gave it to her, I think she said it was from the 1960's. It's real snakeskin people..... One of my most treasured accessories. All in all, I love this outfit.

Once I started to make my skirt I knew right away that I had to take photos in front of this ghastly yellow building. Perfect location. Stella and I had fun taking photos of each other today and we both think the Pop Art setting is totally fab.

Today has been uplifting as I visited my nephew in hospital. He had heart surgery a few days ago and is doing splendidly. Nobody thought little Ransom was going to make it when he was born. The first 10 months were mostly spent in ICU, at the hospital. But his is a strong little guy and so adorable. Every time the nurse or doctor came near him he closed his eyes in the hope they wouldn't see him, or perhaps he though if they thought he was a sleep, they would leave him alone. Aaww, he makes my heart sing.

OMG, I'm like a kid in a candy store. I picked up Rita's patterns today. I wore her sunny yellow frock and she was thrilled to see it being worn. I think it made her chock a bit. I meant to get a photo with Rita today, but alas I forgot in the excitement. I have lovingly gone through them, straightened the packets listed them bagged them and looked some up on line.

Some packets are in poor condition, others are brilliant for their age, but mostly the patterns look in good nick. Here they are for your viewing pleasure.

I love the internet, I was able to print out the covers for the last five patterns. The last five patterns were in various states, all have no covers, some have no instructions and some have only the bodice or blouse.

This is my candy explosion dress. We went to GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) in Brisbane last week to check out the 21st Century exhibition again, and my dress just went all too well with Yayoi Kusama's, Soul Under the Moon installation.

This dress is made using Simplicity 7715 from 1970. The cover states this is a Designer Fashion, but lists no names. It is also a New Sizing, for narrow shoulders. This suits my shape, as I always have to alter the shoulders and back.

I love my new front wrap stripey dress, but it has an overwhelming issue that needs to be fixed. The hem is just not flat. I was hoping that a wash and an iron would fix it, but it did not. Dag nab it. Where I failed with this dress was in the lining. I used a pink fabric that was in my stash, and it was heavier than the stripey fabric and they didn't fall in the same way. Also, I initially thought I could make this dress reversible, but it was totally doing my head in trying to figure out how to do that. I attached the lining at the neck and down both the left and right sides, then gave up. I used facing on the armholes and totally bodged up the hem.

I really like this dress however and next time, because I am planning the next time, I will follow the instructions to a tee. I have a wedding coming up next spring. The next dress will be in a sparkly baby blue vintage fabric that I scored at the markets for a steal and I will splurge and buy vintage beading that I have spotted at a bead and trimming shop for $22 a metre. Eek. It will still work out to be a super bargain frock.

I know of a fabric shop in Redcliffe that is overflowing with vintage finds if you can be bothered to dig through the mammoth mess. They have many rows of trimmings that was making me giddy. In the end I only bought 2 different types as I had no real plan on how I wanted to use them and I could not stop thinking about the beaded trimming I had already seen at a South Brisbane Trimming and Bead shop. I did buy my boy/girl Ginger an adorable pair of 1970's school shorts made by King Gee and a old school bonds T-shirt in a dirty green.

Oh and here is the last circle skirt I made for a girl friend's dancing queen. Fully loaded with a purple fluffer skirt too. Loves. I may need to plan a Rock'n'Roll party for all these well dress bobby sockers.

Rita's Dresses.

I got a call from Rita yesterday to tell me she dug out her dresses and asked me if I was interested. "Hell Yes!"

I feel like I've won lotto and robbed someone at the same time. Rita was sad to see her dresses go, but knew she had to let them go. I assured her they were going to a good home where they would be loved.

I had to rush home and try them on. What a mission, 50's zips in dresses are short and hence frustratingly tight to get on and off especially when I am in a hurry to quickly try the next one on.
Rita's mum made most of the dresses, so the patterns of these dresses will be in the stash that Rita is picking up soon. Excited.

The blue spotty dress is a dress Rita made herself when she did a short dressmaker's course. It was a self drafted pattern. Well worn and with lots of age spots. I will have to see how it washes.

I really like the bodice on this one and it looked familiar and wah lah, look what I found in my stash.

This next sunny yellow dress is Rita's favourite, she wore it when she her and her husband were courting. She tells me if this dress was washed and ironed then she had to wear it. I think it's my favourite too.

Rita's mum was always asking Rita why she didn't wear the blue dress she made her, and that's when she wore it. The colours are amazing on this dress.

The next two dresses were made for Rita's honeymoon, but Rita said she fell pregnant straight away and never wore them. She gained weight while pregnant and never lost it, so these dresses are fresh and perky. Notice the pineapple print. Lucky me to have two pineapple print dresses.

I feel a little sad, because Rita never socialized much once she was married. Sad for Rita, but it has preserved the loveliness of these dresses as they have been in the back of Rita's cupboard since 1958.
The next two dress are not so pleasing for me, total polyester and either not flattering or just not my size.

Rita hasn't gotten rid of anything and she has lived in her house since she was married. I feel giddy thinking about the treasure she has. Rita mentioned that she needs to start packing the house up and getting rid of some belongings. Is it wrong to ask to go to her house and see her home?

Check out these Vintage Darlings. I love that Stella loves her vintage styles as much as her Mumma. And the other little girl is my friend Mazzy's little girl Lili. Cute a s buttons.

I have been going to the local trash and treasure style markets for years now and never found any old patterns. I have bought vintage bias binding, ric rac, wrapping paper and other lovely goodies from a lady that use to have a haberdashery shop in the 70's. A few weeks ago I accosted her and queried whether she had any patterns from her shop days. She replied that she had patterns from when she was a dress maker but they were stored somewhere at her house. Being the elderly woman that she is she told me the longest story about how she never throws anything out and that before she was married in 1948 she was my size and that she still had all her dresses. Anyway, I got a phone call from Rita on the weekend and her brother has all her Mum's patterns still and that I can buy them. A lot of 40 patterns for $30. It's like Christmas people, my heart skipped a beat and I can barely wait. Early April is when I should get them all. Yippee. It has inspired Rita to find her stash too. Excited!

How adorable are little girls in full circle skirts teamed with tulle underlays. I have been on a mission lately, making skirts as presents and also just because. I have added poodles, cats, and sweetie appliques, some made from vintage fabric swatches on the skirts; topped with sequins and fake diamonds. Ah, every girl's dream (except for Ginger, who loves her boy's clothes!) I wish I was was my Mummy when I was a little girl, but then maybe I wouldn't be into sparkles and frocks now. I was so blogging over blogging from Frockruary, that I gave it a rest. However I don't want you lovelies to forget me so here is a sneaky peak at my latest stripeylicous frock.

It's really hard to get a good photographer round here. This photo is taken by my 2 year old, Ginger. Isn't it yummy. I will endeavour to get a few good shots when I have a bit more time.
I am making lots of little girl skirts, perfect for twirling. I will also start on Alby's bedroom transformation. It's been the play room for too long now. Here is a before shot. Now he wants volcanoes......

I'm very pleased and excited to have my girlfriend Kelly and her daughter Lili coming to Brisvegas from Japan. They are leaving a scary place. I only hope her husband comes soon too. Poor Japan, I hope she will be alright after all this mind blowing destruction and loss.

Well folks, this frock finds us at the end of Frockruary and the end of an Aussie summer. It was a difficult choice to make as to which dress I would end Frockruary on; I went for a dress which is a sewing achievement for me. I learnt how to make bound buttonholes and I had the patience to hand stitch all my seems.

McCall's 5444

This dress is made from McCall's 5444 from 1960. The fabric is a stretch cotton and was a mere $2 a metre from my local fabric store. I originally made the dress with the pencil skirt, thinking the stretch of the fabric would give my butt some support in the fitted skirt. What happened though was that my butt got way too much ease and did what it does. It was not a good look. I may make this dress again in a thick and supportive fabric.
I was a good blogger today and took some close ups of my bound button holes and my flash vintage buckle. With practice those bound buttonholes will look very posh indeed. The belt needed to be a couple of mm's slimmer to fit better. I think I will make another belt in black and the removable collar in black too.

Hello. Not so exciting, today's frock. I did purchase it to be an everyday, summer frock, for lazing around the pool and house.
Today we went to the beach, so it was the best option. Today's frock is by Miss Cherry. It is comfy, but maybe needs the hem raised a bit??. We went to the beach today, so this was the most appropriate dress left in my wardrobe. This photo was taken, in front of the sandbags at Cotton Tree, at the Sunshine coast. I totally need an old fashion swim suit that covers my whole body as I'm I have sun phobia.

Check out Stella's Gidget outfit, purchased a few weeks ago from my fave op shop for only 50c, she was a reluctant pin up today, boo hoo. And Ginger's butt is to die for, if only but dimples were this cute our entire lives.

Eeek, 10 minutes left of the day. I had better bloody well blog about my frock.
Today's frock is refashioned from a 1970's Japanese Kimono. I had the Kimono for years before I refashioned it. Now I wear my dress often. The fabric feels so luxurious. I basically used the sleeves to make the bodice. In this instance a halter neck. I probably could have fit the bust a bit better. I really have had no good luck or good knowledge, thus fa,r when making halter necks. Anyhow, the fabric's beauty far surpasses any poor sewing and fitting skills in this frock.

I went to a BBQ at my sister's place today and my uncle Wayne brought over for magazine size boxes of patterns from my Aunty. Very exciting. I will have to let you know how exciting.....

As it gets closer to the end of February, and the end of Frockruary, I feel an urgency to wear my most fabulous frocks before my time is up.

My Pineapple dress, one of the funnest dresses I've made and worn. Made from Vogue 6478. It was a surprisingly easy dress to make considering the pattern had no printed instructions. LOVES.
When I first wore this dress on Christmas day, I spent the whole time adjusting my strapless bra, which I was wearing with the back strap pulled down lower than the dress line. Very uncomfortable. I have since bought a stick on bra, which is two band aids basically, shaped like bra cups. They were a little weird to apply, but I love the results. I feel like a perky 20 year old again. Babies and gravity are not kind to a woman's bosom. And if I knew that when I was 20, I would have went bra less more often.
On another note, I was so worried about bound buttonholes, but I practiced last night. It was really quite simple and the results are so pretty. Just physically doing each step made it so much easier than picturing each step in my head.

What a lovely Garden Party Frock. I purchased this dress from a Church Garage sale for the pricey sum of $1. Worth every cent as it's been worn to a Wedding, High Tea, Hen's Party, and just because I love it. It is 100% synthetic and needs a slip so it is strictly a cooler weather dress. Dress it up with gold heels, belt and clutch, or down with ballet flats and a practical bag.
This dress is a Damon International a division of Leon Cutler, I'm guessing it's late 70's or early 80's. Worn today with my all time favourite belt, wooden, with mother of pearl dots. My Fret belt.

I have been looking forward to finishing this dress as I having been aching to wear my very fabulous handed beaded belt bought as a present from Mexico by my very fabulous and uber stylish friend Peter.
This is the first time ever I have made a dress from a block colour, not patterns. Quite an achievement for moi, peppies.
It is made from McCall's 6673 from 1962. The pattern cover is battered, the instructions are missing and also the pencil skirt pieces, however the 3 bodice options are all in there and it was simple to make even without the instructions. I made view C with unmounted sleeves and I opted to shorten the sleeves.

I met up with my Auntie today and she teed me up some fabric that she inherited from an old lady that she helped to look after. The pieces are mostly too little to make anything, however it is a lovely look at a dressmakers story, with pieces from the 50's through to the 80's.

Yah, the weather has cooled down and I can feel comfortable as well as look fabulous. Here is a frock I made last year. I made it literally the day of the night that we were having a party and was putting finishing touches to it as guests were arriving. It was made from New Look 6699, the pink floral view minus the ruffles. I had only 1/2 metre of the leopard cotton, so fitting the bodice was tight.

I'm pretty excited about a dress I finished last night. I took the time to hand stitch the seams and now I'm washing it to wear tomorrow. I also just this morning received a dress in the mail from Bettie Page Clothing. I had been eyeing it off for a while, then it went half price. *sigh*

It is so hot here, a balmy 38 degrees Celsius in my backyard. I have to keep wetting my hair just to keep cool. Today is one of the busiest with mummy's taxi today, with all 3 whipper snappers have activities, the fruit shopping had to be done, I had to start dinner at lunchtime, put Ginny down for a nap, do some sewing (of course) and find a few minutes to blog. Phew.
Anyway, today's frock is a vintage one, made by Gala Travelon. Maybe from the 60's. It's 70% tervlene ( I have never heard of this before) and 30% linen. Tervlene must be synthetic, as it doesn't need ironing. It's bloody hot though. It looks fresh and it's quite short, so I feel a little summery, but frankly everything is hot at the moment. I'm pretty sure I'm feed up with Brisbane's summer. And I believe it's a very mild 20 degrees in Melbourne. Lucky southerners.
This is another 50center from the op shop. I tried to give it away once, but my gal friend left it here, I wonder if that was on purpose?

We spent a few hours yesterday soaking up the beauty at our friend's new house. They bought acreage, and as well as some beautiful man made gardens around their house they have a massive dam in the backyard. Here is a hilarious photo of Ginger with the damn in the background. OMG. It is sooo hot today, that as soon as I'm finished blogging about this dress I am headed for the pool. We attempted to go to the Volkswagen Car Show today, but we all lasted about 10 minutes, way too hot. It was in a car park off the highway. All those lovely vans, wagons, buggys and bugs, they needed to be next to the beach somewhere, with a slight ocean breeze, not getting hot reflections off the bitumen car park. I didn't even get any photos, it was too hot to stop. We flew around stop for a few seconds top look at a van named Daisy that was all lovely and red on the outside, with white and red leather upholstery on the inside.
Anyhow, today's frock is one I purchased a few years ago now, One of the rare occasions when I have bought a brand new dress and paid full price. I simply could not resist the polka dots and the shape is lovely.

All the girls wore frocks today. Stella is wearing Simplicity 7366 from 1976, pullover jumper, minus the pockets. And Ginger is wearing Simplicity 5872, view 1, a little more involved than Stella's dress, but still pretty easy. The thing I love about having 2 girls is that Stella's fab frocks will become Gingers and when they are older they will share (or maybe fight) their clothes.

I decided to bring out the the gold frock for evening wear, as this Number is a little OTT for the school run. How can I not have a good time in this sparkly frock.
This dress is Vintage from, maybe the 60's. The tag says Bourne and Hollingsworth LTD, Oxford St W.I. Sounds posh. I would not normally even look at a dress with this lower cut waist and pleats, as I never thought it was a flattering look for me, but this dress is literally golden. I feel a little like Cleopatra.

Fruity Cocktail Frock.
This dress I finished yesterday, it sat in the too hard pile for a while and it has gone through some transformations. I'm a bad blogger though, because I didn't take any during pictures. It was just too traumatic, trust me, I looked like a ham. It has now been made with a combination of 2 patterns, both altered slightly. Style 4337, 1985 and Simplicity 9744, 1990.
I started this dress before I made my pineapple dress. I was fixated on having an open back fruit dress, obviously! The lime fabric initially was made with Style 4337, view 1, but was very unflattering. I fortunately had enough fabric left to make a new bodice, from Simplicity 9744, view 2. I have made this dress before, Frock, No. 2 and Frock No. 9. Once again I made it with a lower back, and this time I got a picture of it. I love the deep pockets, Ginger and went to the shops today, and I didn't need a bag at all, not even when I bought some new hair product and a comb, straight in the pockets. The side of the pockets are in with the front panel of the skirt seam, which I like. The skirt has only 3 panels, ooh different and unusual!
Ginger's dress, another fruity number, is an op shop find, handed down from her big sister Stella, it has been homemade by another Mummy somewhere, and much loved before it came into our home. Are we not deliciously cute, with our matching fruitiness and head angles?

We popped in to a local op shop, one that is overflowing with stock and found these lovely bits of fabric. The two floral pieces are vintage and only half a metre, so they will make something for the girls, after my self indulgent Frockruary. There is 2.6 metres of the stripes, I feel giddy with the cuteness this fabric will make up as a dress!

Last thing, I love how Stella left her dolls yesterday and had to take a photo before cyclone Ginger destroyed it.

Now it's time to get ready to have some kind of fruity cocktail, eat Spanish tapas from a train and watch local band Gentle Ben and his Sensitive Side, with my husband in the Valley tonight. Frock'n'Roll.

This little number, I made in the spring. I have been meaning to blog about it ever since, but never in my mummy schedule did I get a chance to take a photo. The Frockruary challenge is especially good for this reason.
Made from McCalls's 2138 from 1969. I made view C, even adding some bead trim. The fabric is a light weight cotton, a market find, dating from the 60's. Apart from the trim, this dress is so 60's baby. At the time of making this dress I was in a hurry (I think I wanted to wear it the next day to a Tupperware party!); and omitted the facing from the arms and instead using bias binding and top stitched it too. I love this pattern, it was very easy to make, and I love that I could cut a dress from approximately 2 metres of fabric. Next time I will finish it more carefully for that posh look.
Since making this dress and reading a stack of blogs, I have been more careful in my execution. I am a total self taught sewist (apart from grade 8 Home EC) and have learnt so much since I have joined this blog world.

Ugh, the walkaway dress. I love the pattern, but hate how this looks on me. I thought maybe it was the checks, but no, I just don't like it. The whole thing was and is a drama.
Made from Retro Butterick B4790 a reprint of a 1952 pattern. I cannot even remember where I first saw this dress made up, but I loved it instantly, just not on me. I started making this dress in spring, (September 2010), but it was was too long in the bust. I had to unpick a heap of the bias just to shorten the bust at the shoulders and by then I was quite bored, until the Frockruary Challenge 2011. I literally finished it yesterday, washed it in the hopes it would sit better and after wearing it to school this morning (and sticking out like a sore thumb), I knew it needed more adjustments. I added a button to the back fastening to pull the under dress tighter and it helped, but mostly the under dress rides up all the time. Not to mention how large my hips and wide my shoulders look in this dress.

I didn't get a blogg'n chance to post my frock yesterday. It was a busy day with kids activities and I planned a Spanish feast for the family for valentine's Day, followed by a lush desert.
Here it is made from simplicity 6219 from 1965. I love the fabric, not sure a bout the dress.

I made this little diddy to wear to a friend's wedding. I was breast feeding at the time, so the neckline was split a bit deeper and pinned together with a brooch. I have since sewn it back up and made the neckline less sweetheart and more v. The whole dress actually changed shape quite a bit as I took the darts right in to make it a shape more flattering. I have since made this same dress for a gal friend, her dress was more successful, I put it down to fabric choice. My dress is a really light cotton and my friend's dress was a vintage lace lined with satin. Her dress showed off that empire line better.

I have had a very lazy day, filled with a nap and a movie. My dress today is a bit of a freestyle'n frock. I traced the dress from a swing style top I had, lengthened it and added a big ruffle and skinny straps in a vintage cotton. It's very east to wear, I don't even bother to iron the ruffle. The photo is a bit blurry, but that's okay, that's the way I was feeling today. Stella took it while balancing in plastic high heels. She is such a slave to fashion!

This dress is one I have purchased, just last week, for a grand sum of $1. It has been homemade, I can tell by the numerous thread colours used. I'm pretty certain I may even have a very similar pattern in my stash. The collar is probably meant to be worn up, but that's way too hot, and the sleeves down (they also have a contrasting white band), but the entire look is a little bit Nicky from Big Love. I thing I will cut the sleeves at this 3/4 length and change the white band on the collar to a darker shade, maybe purple. This dress has a side zip. If you look closely the check fabric has a gold stripe through, tres' glamour. It may become a fave, it was perfect to wear to the markets this morning as it kept the sun off my skin.

Off to finish off some more frocks, I would hate to loose my own challenge.

Hit Em Up, Rawhide.
I made this frock 2 years ago, a breastfeeding frock (notice the clasp at the spaghetti straps) from New Look 6675. It's a bit big around the bust and dodgy in places due to my lack of experience at the time of making it up. I LOVE the cowgirl print, but I may find a new home for her or put her away for if Stella or Ginger ever want it.

The school pick up was uber cute as a little fellow (3years old) who loves John Wayne movies just couldn't keep his eyes off my frock. How cute!

Holy torpedoes, I can't believe I have so many dresses. This is a fave. My Diner Dress. Who can go past sweet baby pink polka dots?
Made from Simplicity 6838, 1975, view 2; about a year ago. I remember being a bit confused about some techniques in this pattern. I am confident next time, I will nail it though. I have some real cute cherry fabric that will make me another, maybe view 3 with a contrasting collar.
